waste of money and time

Posted : 16 years, 7 months ago on 8 October 2007 03:45 (A review of Primer)

This movie took FOREVER, and I do mean FOREVER, to get into its subject of time travel. Nothing made sense in the beginning of the film, and where it was going, no one had a clue, so when time travel came into perspective, it was like "huh?"

It also looked like a documentary instead of fiction.

Waste of time. I am glad this was a rental, not a purchased dvd.

futuristic action

Posted : 16 years, 7 months ago on 7 October 2007 06:51 (A review of Fortress)

Lambert and his wife are expecting their 2nd child. However, in this futuristic world, only one child is allowed per family. Eventually they are both captured and sent to a highly secured prison in the middle of nowhere.
Escape is apparently impossible.
But is it?

Decent acting. Not the greatest performance by Lambert though.
This is definitely a film for guys (or anyone who likes to see a good fight!), it's filled with action, and is a good entertainment.

promising

Posted : 16 years, 7 months ago on 7 October 2007 06:42 (A review of The I Inside)

Ryan Philippe is a man who wakes up in a hospital and does not remember being married to Anna (Piper Perabo), nor the current date - 2002. Soon enough, he time-travels between 2000 and 2002. He will discover events in his life to help him recover his memory: his brother Peter (Robert Sean Leonard)'s accident in 2000, the car accident in 2002 and his love affair with a woman named Claire.

This movie wasn't bad at all. Philippe did some pretty decent acting. However, it is unfortunate Robert Sean Leonard didn't make much of an appearance, because he is excellent material. Piper Perabo as nurse Anna Hathaway overacts and her character is rather not credible.

For those viewers who enjoyed MEMENTO, this is similar. The viewer must follow closely the story, else he/she will be lost! The script gets confusing at times.

THIS IS NOT A SPOILER, but I have to mention the last scene, because it was totally useless. A specific time is mentioned at the end and everything becomes clear. My belief is that the script/movie should have ended there, as everything suddenly made sense, and *no further explanation was needed*. However, the film producers might have felt the need to add that extra scene (similar to the very first scene by the way), and to me, that just destroyed the whole movie. I felt as if they thought viewers were stupid and needed an explanation.

Hence my rating of 6/10.

(I would have given a 7 if not for that last, useless scene.)

this is bad

Posted : 16 years, 7 months ago on 7 October 2007 06:25 (A review of No Good Deed)

I thought I'd seen my share of bad movies. Boy was I wrong! This is pure crap.
It turned out to be a promising story, although depicting cops as intellectuals has always been funny!

Jackson is a cop who plays the cello and is on his way to a musical camp, when a neighbour requests him to find her daughter, who's been missing for 3 days. Reluctantly he gives up his vacation with his music, and starts an investigation around Turk Street. There, he stumbles upon a bunch of cons, including a girl (Milla Jovovich).

The script was stupid. Very unrealistic. Also it had many flaws, I don't even know where to start.
The acting was terribly bad, and hard to watch, even Jackson was awful, that means it was also badly directed because Jackson is an excellent actor (usually).

One of the worst action films.

HOWEVER, as a comedy, it was hilarious.

I should point out that this is a movie shelved in the action section - NOT comedy. But it was so bad, and so stupid, we just laughed all the way through.

Don't waste your money, or your time with this bad made-for-tv movie.

brilliant adaptation

Posted : 16 years, 8 months ago on 10 September 2007 01:18 (A review of The Count of Monte Cristo)

Edmond Dantes (Jim Caviezel) takes what he believes is an innocent letter on behalf of Napoleon. His friend Fernand Mondego (Guy Pearce) betrays him. Dantes is sent to the Chateau d'If where he spends many years during which he meets a priest who will teach him to read, to write and many subjects. The priest will also tell him where a certain treasure is buried and with it, Edmond will become the Count of Monte Cristo, and eventually will seek out revenge to those who betrayed him.

To be honest, I didn't expect this to be a great film. At best, I expected an acceptable action film. However, I soon realized that it was a great film! What can you not love: it's comedy, romance, action, drama - all in one movie!

The script was great and has wonderful one-liners: "I'm a priest, not a saint" (and later "I'm a count, not a saint") is one of the best lines of the film.

The actors were all quite credible, and offered nice performances. Luis Guzman probably has the best role as Jacopo, the Count of Monte Cristo's aide.

As for the action, I felt that there weren't enough of it, although the fencing scenes were well done.

A brilliant adaptation of Alexandre Dumas' novel of the same name, I highly recommend this film.

Naturally annoying

Posted : 16 years, 8 months ago on 9 September 2007 10:19 (A review of Supernatural)

Two brothers, Sam and Dean (Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles respectively), search for their father, who left on a demon-hunting trip and has been missing for a few days. All through the first season, the two brothers kill off demons, face ghosts and hear horrific legends, while on the trail of their father and the demon that killed their mother and Sam's girlfriend Jessica.

While I agree with Jessica's review, I unfortunately found the show very repetitive. How many times can they kill off demons and ghosts and supernatural beings? I know that's what the show is about, but frankly, there was no originality in any episodes after the first lot.

As for the acting: Yes, Jared Padalecki got on my nerves too. But both characters are, to be honest, obnoxious.

Did I just read there is a second season? That's surprising, considering the first season finale - which I just saw on dvd. I certainly didn't expect another season with *that* ending. In any case, I am not desperate to watch the second season.

Don't misunderstand me; this is an enjoyable show - if you can get past the obnoxious characters, and unoriginal scenarios.

entertainment

Posted : 16 years, 8 months ago on 9 September 2007 01:56 (A review of Next)

Cris 'Cadillac' Johnson (Nicolas Cage) performs magical acts in Las Vegas. He foresees by a few minutes what is going to happen. An FBI agent (Julianne Moore) is searching to use his services to locate a nuclear bomb brought in the country by Russians. But Cris won't help. Until he meets Liz Cooper (Jessica Biel). He will do anything to keep her safe.

So many flaws in the script I don't know where to begin. The dialogue is trite and predictable.
The CG was indeed awful, but all the action scenes compensate for the rest of the movie.
Cage and Biel were very lousy performers. And Moore simply looked old, the make-up on her was so bad.

The ending was good though. You expect it, and you don't

Worth watching for entertainment purposes only.

mom-daughter relationship

Posted : 16 years, 8 months ago on 8 September 2007 10:24 (A review of Because I Said So)

Diane Keaton plays the mother of three beautiful girls (Mandy Moore, Lauren Graham and Piper Perabo). Desperate to find her youngest daughter (Mandy Moore) a boyfriend, she puts an ad on the Internet without her daughter knowing about this. The daughter soon meets an architect (Tom Everett Scott) who will become a boyfriend, and will also have a fortunate encounter with someone her mother disliked, musician Johnny (Gabriel Macht). With whom will the daughter make her life?

Cute story. But very predictable, like most romantic comedies.

Diane Keaton at times is hysterical in her acting, and her character got to my nerves: the relationship she has with her youngest daughter should change. As Moore's character says "it's my life".

Moore's acting was very superficial. Graham and Perabo were annoying.
Tom Everett Scott was snobby.

Funny at times. Worth watching once. On television. And if it's raining outside.

different

Posted : 16 years, 8 months ago on 8 September 2007 03:51 (A review of After the Wedding)

A man, Jacob (Mikkelsen) currently living in India and educating Indian children is requested to go to Denmark. He is supposed to meet Jørgen (Rolf Lassgård) who will provide him with funds to help his orphanage survive. What Jacob will find is a secret that will change his life, quite simply, forever.

Good points for the cast, the acting performances, the script and photography.
It is unfortunate that the movie went on and on, and was just too slow to fully enjoy.

Worth watching if you have the patience to wait for the ending.

if you like musicals...

Posted : 16 years, 8 months ago on 7 September 2007 12:38 (A review of Dreamgirls (2007))

A story of romance, it's also about making it to the top, with of course a few sacrifices along the way.
Three talented women become backup singers to Jimmy Thunder Early (Eddie Murphy), and eventually make their way to the top with the help of their manager Curtis Taylor Jr (Jamie Foxx).

Beautiful photography. Great costumes. Perfect music. Decent script. Acceptable acting from Jennifer Hudson (she should stick to singing, as her voice is quite powerful) and the rest of the cast, especially Eddie Murphy; a very nice surprise from his idiotic, stupid comedy performances. And of course, what a choreography!

If you like musicals, you'll definitely enjoy this.

I wasn't aware of the Dreamgirls broadway production, and wasn't very interested in watching this film... but I gave in tonight. I was in the mood for some motown music, and this movie satisfied me.

Worth watching.
A must for those who enjoy musicals.
