too predictable and too long

Posted : 16 years, 9 months ago on 19 July 2007 01:23 (A review of Spider-Man 3)

Everyone here has made good points, so I'll just summarize my views quickly.

First, I agree 100% with Jessica, and ForgivenForSure has some legitimate points about the ticks off in this film.

The jazz scene was stupid, and I too forgot this was a Spiderman film!

Also, most scenes were very dark, especially the fights between Harry and Spiderman in the alley. The visual effects were lost because the camera work was going all over the place.

While I enjoyed Spiderman 1 and 2, this third installment was way too long, way too filled with villains that weren't depicted properly or explained (Sandman especially), and it got to me.

An unnecessary lengthy film. I don't think I'll watch this again.
Unless you pay me ;) to waste more time.

disappointed

Posted : 16 years, 9 months ago on 17 July 2007 11:57 (A review of The Last Legion)

Rome, circa 470 A.D. The Roman Empire is weak. Young Romulus Augustus flees the city and embarks for Britain. He is searching for his "Last Legion", a legion of supporters.

Historical movies are always very difficult to judge, and rightly so, since they usually lack details of the depicted era, and this movie has those flaws. It is far from being perfect, or even good. It is rather an empty motion picture.

From the beginning, the plot is quite confusing - just like the book it is based on, written by Valerio Massimo Manfredi.

None of the actors (especially Ben Kingsley, Colin Firth and Thomas Sangster) are believable, unfortunately.

The story and its scenes are soooo predictable, it's pathetic.
The sound was lousy, and the music was so loud that it made it difficult to hear most of what was said.

Special effects are not even worth mentioning. There are better historical films that are worth watching. Even some historical B-movies might have been better!

The worst of the Last Legion is its ending. How "Hollywood" can it get!

Pure disappointment.

the best of this series (so far)

Posted : 16 years, 9 months ago on 16 July 2007 10:44 (A review of Hitched (Regan Reilly Mysteries, No. 9))

In this ninth title of the Regan Reilly Mysteries, private investigator Regan Reilly gets married! But of course before she can say "I do" she will have to get her dress back... That's right, her dress was stolen along with 3 other wedding gowns *one week* before the wedding day.
In the meantime, her husband-to-be, Jack "no relation" Reilly, is trying to locate The Drip, a bank robber that strikes in New York, only on rainy days.
Wouldn't you know it, those two stories are somehow linked.

The story was much better developed than the previous books in the series. The numerous characters were fabulously funny, while some can be annoying (mainly the other brides).

Fast-paced, easy to read, this is an entertaining and enjoyable novel.

enjoyable but that is it

Posted : 16 years, 9 months ago on 16 July 2007 10:38 (A review of Premonition)

Housewife Linda Hanson (Sandra Bullock) is married to Jim (Julian McMahon), has 2 daughters (Shyann McClure and Courtney Taylor Burness), and her best friend Annie (Nia Long). Linda, one day, wakes up and gets the news that Jim is dead. She wakes up the next morning to find him alive.
She decides to investigate what is happening, to try and prevent her husband's death.

Not exactly fast-paced, and certainly not the greatest thriller/suspense movie, this isn't Bullock's best either! It is however refreshing to see McMahon in a movie rather than his usual Nip/Tuck series. The kids are not well cast - neither of them look like Sandra or Julian.

The ending IS a disappointment. Since this is a thriller/suspense, you would think the scriptwriter would have come up with some not-obvious ending. However, he did. So halfway through the movie, what you expect to happen does happen, and that is utterly annoying.
And that very last scene? How stupid could that be. Useless. One of the worst useless scenes I've seen - sooo American.

Nothing original, or new in this movie.

Still entertaining, despite its plot holes. But I wouldn't watch it again.

good but predictable

Posted : 16 years, 9 months ago on 14 July 2007 10:58 (A review of Burned (Regan Reilly Mysteries, No. 8))

Regan Reilly, a private investigator based in Los Angeles and whose fiancé, Jack "no relation" Reilly, is in New York, takes off to meet her best friend Kit in Hawaii. There, a woman, Dorinda Dawes, has been found dead, and soon enough, Regan is on the job, instead of on vacation.
Regan will have to discover who murdered Dorinda, who's playing pranks at the hotel, and who stole the royal leis.

Regan Reilly Mysteries are always fun to read. The author doesn't have a particular writing style. It's simple, easy, fast-paced and has witty dialogue.
Unfortunately this eighth adventure in the Regan Reilly Mysteries is a little too predictable.
Yes, the characters are fun, but anyone reading this will see where the ending leads.

Still an enjoyable read.

excellent comedy

Posted : 16 years, 9 months ago on 14 July 2007 12:53 (A review of Hot Fuzz)

His superiors being jealous of his perfect record, Sergeant Nicholas Angel (Simon Pegg) is transferred from London to the seemingly crime-free village of Sandford. There he meets his new partner, Danny Butterman (Nick Frost), the witless son of the police chief. A series of shocking accidents upsets the village, and Angel is certain that the village is not what it seems.

Brilliant acting, well-directed.
Yes, some scenes at the end are gruesome, but they are well done and quite funny.

Filled with car chases, gun fights, explosive bodies, this is a hilarious comedy.

(Thanks to Prelude76 for recommending this movie to me, I wouldn't have watched it otherwise, and would have missed on a great British film.)

unpredictable

Posted : 16 years, 9 months ago on 13 July 2007 02:52 (A review of Popped (Regan Reilly Mysteries, No. 7))

Regan Reilly, a Los Angeles based P.I., goes to Las Vegas to help out Danny Madley, a childhood friend. Danny is producing a reality show that is competing against a sitcom, and both shows are being presented to Roscoe Parker, a very rich man, who is fond of hot air ballons. Danny's show is getting sabotaged; Regan's job is to find who's behind everything.
And will Jack "no relation" Reilly propose to Regan?

Carol Higgins Clark has an easy-to-read writing style, that makes her novels a lot of fun. Her unusual, somewhat clichéd characters make for an enjoyable read, and the witty dialogue are amusing.

Fast-paced, this is the seventh book in the Regan Reilly Mysteries.

excellent

Posted : 16 years, 9 months ago on 12 July 2007 02:09 (A review of The Last King of Scotland)

Dr Garrigan (James McAvoy) expects to find exotism in Uganda. He certainly will find it, especially after meeting the country's President, Idi Amin (Forest Whitaker) and becoming his personal physician. A chain of events will change Garrigan's life, forever.

Absolutely wonderful, brilliant cast. I especially approve of Whitaker's "African" accent in English. Excellent portrayal of those people. McAvoy's character is extremely naive and he does a great acting job.

The ending may be quite shocking to some, I myself couldn't bear to watch a few minutes of very gruesome (but necessary and justified) violence (after 1h45 minutes of watching).

Certainly not a disappointment.
A well directed film, I highly recommend it.

no chemistry

Posted : 16 years, 9 months ago on 11 July 2007 11:06 (A review of The Ex)

Sofia (Amanda Peet) and husband Tom (Zach Braff) expect their first child. How can they raise the child when Tom loses his job? Tom then takes up Sofia's father's offer to work with him. There, he meets wheelchaired Chip Sanders (Jason Bateman) who gradually makes Tom's life hell, both personally and professionally. Tom has to prove that Chip is out to destroy him.

Some parts were funny, but this is not the comedy of the year.
There was absolutely no chemistry between Zach Braff and Amanda Peet.
Jason Bateman was possibly the only good actor and even then! - although all of the actors overacted, especially Sofia's parents (Charles Grodin & Mia Farrow).
This should have been a straight-to-video flick. I almost fell asleep on it, as the jokes were old and so not that funny, and very predictable.
The ending is obviously a happy one, but at least Tom gets to avenge everything that happened to him.

Watch at your own risk. Rent it if you absolutely have nothing else to choose from.

[Edit: Why is this film under the title "Fast Track"? Its name is "The Ex" on the dvd cover and on the disc itself. Nowhere is there a mention of "Fast Track". Say, database problem, anyone?!?]

better and better

Posted : 16 years, 9 months ago on 10 July 2007 11:01 (A review of Jinxed (Regan Reilly Mysteries))

In this sixth novel in the Regan Reilly Mysteries, P.I. Regan Reilly must find actress Whitney Wheldon before it's too late. Why? Because she will inherit two million dollars just by going to Lucretia Standish's wedding, and so will her mother Lilac, and her two uncles Earl and Leon.
But what Whitney doesn't know is that Lucretia's husband-to-be, Edward Fields, knows Whitney, and he will do anything he can to marry 93-year-old Lucretia, including hiring a con man, Rex aka Don, to kidnap Whitney.
Meanwhile, Jack "no relation" Reilly, Regan's new beau, is investigating con artists in New York, and the road will lead him to... Altered States, Whitney's winery.

This novel was more entertaining than others, and certainly more exciting. It has more parallel stories than the earlier Regan Reilly Mysteries, the characters are better developed and there is more action.
Although somewhat predictable, it is nonetheless a very enjoyable book!
