finally some good stuff

Posted : 16 years ago on 18 April 2008 02:38 (A review of The Brave One)

A radio host (Jodie Foster) witnesses her fiance's death and is left for dead. When she comes back to, she gradually sets out to get revenge on her fiance's killers.

It's about time a female character in a movie is shown taking revenge and justice in her hands. Sorry for all the people out there that did not enjoy the movie because they didn't think Foster's character was realistic. But if these things were to happen to you, I'm quite certain, you, like Foster's character, would take the law in your hands and chase after the bad guys. So this is a great film for that.
I also enjoyed Foster's performances, though at times some scenes stretched out.

excellent

Posted : 16 years ago on 18 April 2008 02:26 (A review of Garbage Warrior)

Imagine a home that heats itself, provides its own water, grows its own food, needs no expensive technology, recycles its own waste, and has its own power source. It can be built anywhere, by anyone, out of the things society throws away: tires, bottles, etc. About thirty years ago, American architect Michael Reynolds imagined just such a home and built it.
Throughout this documentary, telling Mike's story and his fight to introduce radically sustainable housing, the viewer will see Mike slowly triumphing over bureaucracy to follow his dream: changing the world's housing structures.

Excellent material. Opens our eyes to many possibilities about housing today.

memories...

Posted : 16 years ago on 18 April 2008 02:16 (A review of Speed)

First, let it be known that this movie is crap. Yes, it is full of action, but it's also got mediocre actors, and the script is filled with flaws.

That said, it brings me back memories from years ago, when I first saw it. I just can't help watching it once every year, just for the memories it brings back: I was living in Riga then, and SPEED was the ONLY movie the ONLY theater played for ... *three months*.
Needless to say, having the need to watch *any movie*, even subtitled in Latvian and Russian, thus hiding half the screen, I went and saw Speed about half a dozen times... at least! So I know this movie by heart, despite its being so bad and predictable. And so funny! (I remember one particular scene that didn't have any subtitles at all... I guess the Russian and Latvian translators didn't figure out what was said.)

For those who don't know anything about the movie, here's the simple plot: A SWAT explosive expert, Jack (K. Reeves), has to deactivate a bomb that is on a bus, without the bus ever going down below 50 MPH. Any passengers get off, the bus will explode. Chase, action, what more can you ask of such a film.

What are you gonna do? :) Watch it or not ?
It's up to you, I know I do... Once a year. Just to have fun!

(If it weren't for the memories, I'd give this film a 5/10.)

good standards

Posted : 16 years ago on 18 April 2008 01:23 (A review of C.R.A.Z.Y.)

The life of Gervais's family, with his wife and 5 sons, Christian, Raymond, Antoine, Zachary and Yvan. Throughout the movie, Zachary is narrating and explaining parts of his life that affected him and how he came to be who he is.

Great soundtrack. Patsy Cline's CRAZY song is the inspiration for the sons' names, and Charles Aznavour, and David Bowie... All great music.
Decent acting and directing.

I didn't care for the plot so much (hence my rating of 6/10), it is still an enjoyable movie for those that appreciate drama.

somewhat enjoyable

Posted : 16 years ago on 17 April 2008 09:47 (A review of The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep)

As the movie starts, the viewer will become aware very soon of what is going to happen: tourists visit and enter a pub where they encounter an old man, telling the story of a young boy - his story obviously! -, Angus, who finds an egg at sea and raises the water horse that hatched from the egg. This all takes place during World War II.

Honestly, not much to say. Bad special effects, predictable story, with not that great actors. Alex Etel, young Angus in this movie, has potential and is quite cute. He probably will appeal to young girls watching this movie.

This can be summarized as a typical Hollywood movie. It's somewhat enjoyable despite its terrible flaws.

good performances

Posted : 16 years ago on 5 April 2008 02:05 (A review of Goya's Ghosts)

Francisco Goya (Stellan Skarsgård) works on a series of paintings, one of which is of Father Lorenzo (Javier Bardem), who is captivated by his painting of Ines Bilbatua (Natalie Portman). When Ines is enquired by the Church about her religious activities and beliefs, her father Thomas contacts Goya with the hope that his connection with Lorenzo will ensure the release of his daughter. What follows is a captivating account of politics and religion during the Spanish Inquisition, that will change their lives.

Not being a fan of Forman films, I was a little skeptic about this movie.
While there certainly are some inaccuracies in the script, the movie is still very enjoyable thanks to its storyline, as well as its cast. Stellan Skarsgård, Javier Bardem and Natalie Portman give good performances, especially Portman since she handles the mother/daughter roles to perfection.
The costumes and decors are quite well done.
Recommended to anyone who enjoys historical movies.

German gore

Posted : 16 years, 1 month ago on 16 March 2008 01:05 (A review of BloodRayne)

This is definitely one of the worst vampire films, and worst video adaptation I've ever seen.
Way too gory. Lots of scenes that shouldn't have been shown, and I actually mean useless scenes that did not need be shot.
Badly acted, badly directed.
And the costumes??? how inaccurate can they be. As if women in that time period were showing off their bellies. Please!
Much too much lighting for the time period as well.
Pure crap.
This must have been meant as a comedy, not a horror picture. Nothing scared me in the film.

lifeless

Posted : 16 years, 1 month ago on 6 March 2008 03:34 (A review of Silk)

First, I have to say how wonderful the book is. As with most cinematographic adaptations, this one fails to bring the story to life on screen.
The actor's performance, and by that I mean Pitt's, is terrible. When you read the book, he certainly does not come to mind. His voice is not appropriate, nor is his age, for the role presented in the book.
That said, I realize that not everyone envisions books the same way, and that is a good thing (most of the time). However, in my eyes, the movie does not do justice to the writing style of Alessandro Baricco, author of the book "Silk".

The cinematography of the movie is beautiful, although at times one has to wonder why there is so much light in the Japanese houses. That seems overdone.

I found the movie much too slow, pointless and ... lifeless.
I had much higher expectations for it.
A disappointment.

good ol' classic

Posted : 16 years, 3 months ago on 21 January 2008 06:58 (A review of 3:10 to Yuma)

Despite its leader, Ben Wade (Ford)'s capture, his gang continues to threaten the town.
Dan Evans (Van Heflin), a rancher, is persuaded to take Wade in secret to the nearest town with a railway station to await the train to the court at Yuma.
But once both of them are in the hotel waiting, it is obvious that the secret is out. A battle of wills starts.

Great action. Beautiful cinematography. What a casting ! Loved them all as actors and characters - speaking of them, they have a great loyalty to their leader, which is just amazingly well-shown.

It was relaxing and refreshing to see a black and white picture that was fun to watch, and whose story was well developed.

Well worth watching.

carrot movie

Posted : 16 years, 3 months ago on 21 January 2008 06:52 (A review of Shoot 'Em Up)

Action = 10/10
Script = 2/10
Actors = 2/10
Comedy = 10/10

Honestly, this should be under comedy as most of the scenes were hilarious.

The title of the movie could have been one of the following:
- Discover What a Carrot Can Do
- The Carrot Killer
- What's up Doc?
- The Carrot Man
- See a Carrot in Action

I'm not joking. All those scenes with carrots are just so hilarious - and stupid - that it's all I remember from this idiotic film.

Besides that, the movie will most definitely be enjoyed by guys and gals who love action, and (really) don't care for a story.

I almost forgot to mention: there is about 15 minutes of talking in the entire 80 minutes of the film. The rest is all guns and action.
So if you're looking for a decent story, don't bother.
If you're looking to watch guns and ridiculous fights, see it.
