funnier than expected

Posted : 15 years, 5 months ago on 22 October 2008 02:26 (A review of Meet Bill)

I expected a totally lousy, ridiculous and stupid movie. So I was quite surprised to see that, despite the slow beginning, it turned out to be an enjoyable film with some great punchlines. ("You look like a Fruit Loop" has become one of my favorites...) Definitely funnier than I expected.
The acting wasn't really fantastic; no one gave a fabulous performance.
It's just a simple film that doesn't really have a point, but is nonetheless entertaining.
Overall, it's a good comedy worth watching once.

surprisingly not bad

Posted : 15 years, 5 months ago on 18 October 2008 12:40 (A review of 2 Days in the Valley)

Looking for a decent and funny suspense? With a great cast? And lots of subplots?
This is a good place to start.
The script was well written, even pretty funny at times.
The actors were well cast and deliver good performances.
Recommended to those who enjoy the genre.

Lost Souls...

Posted : 15 years, 5 months ago on 18 October 2008 12:36 (A review of Stories of Lost Souls)

This film actually consists of several shorts; each title contains the word lost and covers uninteresting lives.

I found this to be one of the worst films I've ever seen. Maybe I just needed a joint or a drink to actually go through this.
Most people will probably find it intellectual, challenging or psychologically interesting. It's not. It's pure boredom.

a cute romantic comedy

Posted : 15 years, 5 months ago on 12 October 2008 06:52 (A review of Made of Honor)

Tom Bailey (Dempsey) has been friends with Hannah (Monaghan) for several years. By the time he realizes he is in love with her, she is returning from a trip in Scotland during which she met ... the man she's about to marry. After requesting Tom be her maid of honor, Tom decides he will have to win her over.

In my opinion, Dempsey was not particularly well cast, however he still pulled it off. Monaghan is all right and so is the rest of the cast.

Although very clichรฉ, this movie still has hilarious moments and is worth watching once.

a great comedy

Posted : 15 years, 5 months ago on 12 October 2008 06:49 (A review of Definitely, Maybe)

Will Hayes (Reynolds) is in the process of getting a divorce. His daughter Maya (Abigail Breslin) wants to know how her parents met and fell in love, so Will relives his past by telling her the story. As Will's story shows, he had met 3 girls, 1 of which is Maya's mom. By the end of the story, Maya must figure out which one of the three is her mother.

Great acting. Especially by Rachel Weisz, Elizabeth Banks, Isla Fisher ... and Ryan Reynolds!

A good script, with a lot of unexpected changes. You think you've figured out just WHO Maya's mom is? Think again!

This is a good romantic comedy. Not to be missed.

one of the worst comedies ever

Posted : 15 years, 5 months ago on 12 October 2008 06:42 (A review of What Happens in Vegas)

This is, in my opinion, one of the worst comedies ever.
No real acting - Come on, Cameron Diaz can't act, and neither can Ashton Kutcher.
There are not many funny scenes - if any at all!
Very badly directed. And the script is beyond predictable.
A total waste of time.

*girls' only* movie

Posted : 15 years, 5 months ago on 12 October 2008 06:33 (A review of P.S. I Love You)

Holly (Hilary Swank) and Gerry (Gerard Butler) are married and considering having children. Quite suddenly Gerry dies leaving Holly widowed. Following his death, she starts receiving letters written by her deceased husband; those letters will help her deal with pain and start a new life.

The film has a great cast! Aside from Swank and Butler, there are the 2 best friends played by Gina Gershon and Lisa Kudrow (whose role is plain hilarious), as well as Kathy Bates (Holly's mother), Harry Connick Jr and Jeffrey Dean Morgan.

It's a nice romantic movie that brings you to Ireland and its beautiful scenery. The photography in fact is quite good.

I honestly didn't expect the movie to be so... tear-jerking and emotional. Expect to cry. A lot. Definitely a great romance not to be missed for those who enjoy this type of movie.

funny

Posted : 15 years, 5 months ago on 12 October 2008 06:22 (A review of Chaos Theory)

Frank Allen (Reynolds) is an obsessed efficiency expert whose very organized life changes to pure chaos very rapidly.

Granted, this film has some funny moments. It's not 100% hilarious all the way, but what makes the film funny, are (some of) the situations that take place.

excellent... up to a point

Posted : 15 years, 9 months ago on 1 July 2008 07:47 (A review of We Own the Night)

We Own The Night's script was truly phenomenal for an American production, because, let's face it, more than half the time American movies are made of lousy script-writers: there are usually a whole lot of flaws, or reactions/attitudes from characters are totally unrealistic or just plain stupid.
This film's main theme is not new. But the way the script was written - up until 1h30 into the movie, anyway - is accurate, and makes a whole lot of sense. The characters' reactions. Their expressions. The dialogs. Unfortunately after 1h30, the script deviates into nonsense, nonetheless leading to a pretty decent ending.

Why else watch this film? Why, a wonderful cast of course! Wahlberg and Phoenix are truly amazing as two brothers. And Robert Duvall as their father is simply amazing, but isn't he always?

A very typical American mafia movie, but definitely one worth seeing.

Beatles anyone?

Posted : 15 years, 9 months ago on 1 July 2008 07:41 (A review of Across the Universe)

What I did know: it is a musical.
What I did not know: it is based on Beatles songs/music.

Typical love story. Nothing new here.

What saves me from giving a 1 or 2/10 rating is the singing. The performers are talented - luckily - and it somewhat makes the film bearable.
The cinematography, the directing, the costumes, the settings... Nothing is memorable.
