too long

Posted : 15 years, 11 months ago on 25 May 2008 11:30 (A review of Tin Man)

Loosely based on the Wizard of Oz, Tin Man has a good cast and everything to be enjoyed by the family: a fantastic magical world in which the good sister, DG, has to overpower an evil witch that took possession of her sister Azkadellia; friends (Cain aka Tin Man, Raw, Glitch, Tutor); mad men (The Mystic Man); and the bad guys of course (Zero).

However, this television mini-series in 3 parts is simply too long, 2 parts would have been just fine. It just keeps dragging on and on. The good thing is that there are no useless repetitive scenes; from 1 part to another, the writers didn't feel the need to summarize what happened previously. (Thank you!)

The acting isn't that great, but it works for most of the actors' performances.
The special effects aren't very special either; nothing worth mentioning.

Tin Man is enjoyable, but just drags on too long, which made me long forward to the ending - which was predictable of course.

nothing new

Posted : 15 years, 11 months ago on 24 May 2008 11:43 (A review of Reservation Road)

Reservation Road. Where a child, Josh Learner, was killed in a hit-and-run. The story of the father Ethan (J. Phoenix), trying to get justice in his hands because the cops aren't finding who did it. So he hires a lawyer Dwight Arno (M. Ruffalo) to help him with his case.........

Nothing new here. That story has been done many many many times. However, the acting is superb, I really enjoyed Phoenix for once, and Mark Ruffalo is just great. Jennifer Connelly as Ethan's wife is perfect.

The script makes the events a little too "coincidental" for my taste. And the story was pretty predictable, still worth watching once.

not bad but

Posted : 15 years, 11 months ago on 24 May 2008 11:39 (A review of The Backwoods)

The summary gives an accurate account of the story, so I won't get into it :)

Gary Oldman just looks way old in this film (like 80-90 years old, but he's not of course), the make-up artists didn't do much good for him! Considine's character is the only one that makes any sense and his instincts should be trusted; however, if they were, there wouldn't be a film...
Ledoyen's acting (or no-acting) is bad. The fact that the film pictures submissive women is annoying and bothering.

I honestly can't find anything that makes this film worth watching.

entertaining

Posted : 15 years, 11 months ago on 24 May 2008 11:32 (A review of National Treasure: Book of Secrets)

An Indiana Jones wannabe, that unfortunately doesn't come close. Not with the special effects (huh hello? other than the City of Gold, I didn't see any), nor the acting (the new cast is good but fails to bring anything to the film), not in the script (filled with goofs), not the directing nor the photography.
There's nothing that catches the eye.
That said, it's a film that has one goal, and that is to entertain its audience. That, in my opinion, is the only thing this movie does.

did I miss something?

Posted : 15 years, 11 months ago on 22 May 2008 11:20 (A review of Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium)

A magical toystore. Fantasy land for children.

I usually love such films, but this one, for some unknown reason, just didn't do it for me. The two actors I usually enjoy watching, Hoffman & Portman, I felt were overacting, and I actually disliked Portman's character right from the start; Hoffman's character was obnoxious; and Bateman was, simply put, idiotic and cliched.

The only thing that saves the movie are the toys.

I must have missed something that makes the movie so great. Everyone else seems to have enjoyed it. I found it boring even after 20 minutes of watching, and found myself longing for the movie to end.

honestly?????

Posted : 15 years, 11 months ago on 22 May 2008 10:54 (A review of Wilbur Wants to Kill Himself)

A movie about someone trying to kill himself and ...
Honestly? Even the title didn't make me want to see this, but after 20 minutes of boredom, I simply had to turn it off. It was going nowhere, except a land of despair which wasn't interesting in the least.
It's too bad really because the film has a great cast.

not impressed but...

Posted : 15 years, 11 months ago on 22 May 2008 10:52 (A review of Untraceable)

Here's a new crime: kidnap someone, and broadcast that person's killing online; his/her fate is based on the number of visitors the site has. Diane Lane is an FBI agent who tries desperately to catch this vicious killer... Soon it'll become personal.

No great acting here. Diane Lane and Colin Hanks are, unlike the rest of the cast, a notch above in their performances.
Not too predictable, but something was missing all through the movie.

Not a bad viewing though. The worst scenes are when the method of killing the victims is shown, and it's different every time, so that's at least interesting.

Posted : 15 years, 11 months ago on 20 May 2008 12:18 (A review of The Girl in the Cafรฉ)

The main actors (Bill Nighy & Kelly Macdonald) are splendid, and well cast. I enjoyed their performances, as well as the supportive actors'.
Decent cinematography for a TV movie.
A great script, with a deep political message which, unfortunately, is very true.

A decent movie recommended to all.

-- On a side note, I must thank Prelude for having recommended I see this film :) --

finally a great French film

Posted : 15 years, 11 months ago on 18 May 2008 11:34 (A review of Odette Toulemonde)

After many viewings of (recent) French films, I'm happy to finally have found one that is worth watching.

Catherine Frot plays Odette Toulemonde. She works as a make-up girl and adores French author Balthazar Balsan, who, one day, shows up on her door step.

The story sounds simple, yet it's not. It's a romantic story, yet it's not.
The movie has its funny (intellectual) moments, which I adored.
I particularly enjoyed Odette's character and persona, she's totally nuts (in a good way, I should add).

It's a surrealistic film about life and happiness.
Definitely a movie I recommend to all.

FYI English subtitles are available on the dvd for those who don't speak French. Accurately translated, I might add. Even for those awkward references mentioned.

excellent

Posted : 15 years, 11 months ago on 11 May 2008 11:15 (A review of There Will Be Blood)

The story of an oilman, Daniel Plainview.

Splendid performances by Daniel-Day Lewis and Paul Dano, who is very convincing as a preacher.
Beautiful cinematography by Robert Elswit.
My hats off to the producers, who took a risk in producing this film, and to the scriptwriters who did outstanding work in adapting the book Oil by Upton Sinclair - even if they didn't respect the book 100%, the final product is a great movie.

I certainly didn't expect this film to be this excellent. Recommended viewing to all.
