extensive coverage of topic

Posted : 16 years, 11 months ago on 12 May 2007 04:58 (A review of Fighting Pharaohs: Weapons and Warfare in Ancient Egypt)

This book is divided in 7 chapters. In the first one, the author provides a description of the allies and enemies of Egypt; this takes account of the Nubians, Libyans, Bedouin, Hittites, Persians, Sea Peoples, Greeks and Romans. The next chapter depicts the numerous weapons, used in Ancient Egyptian times (such as maces, spears, axes, knives, bows and arrows), as well as the military equipment (shields, armours, chariots) and the materials (stones, flint, copper, bronze, iron). The third chapter presents the 9 gods of war Amun, Anhur, Bes, Montu, Ptah, Sekhmet, Set, Ra and the Aten. Chapter four deals with the structure of the army, the training and work of a soldier. It also informs the reader of the dangers and drawbacks in existence to a soldier. The fifth chapter details defences, fortifications and siege warfare, while the sixth one gives details on the various battles and campaigns that took place from the Predynastic period to the Graeco-Roman period. In the concluding seventh chapter, "The Legacy", the author argues that Ancient Egyptian achievements would surely not have been possible without the military. The book contains numerous black and white drawings, photographs and maps, as well as an index. Using archaeological evidence to back up his portrayal of the Ancient Egyptian military system, this is without doubt one of the most important works about warfare in Ancient Egypt. Recommended reading for the interested reader.

too predictable but still good

Posted : 16 years, 11 months ago on 12 May 2007 04:56 (A review of The Secret History of the Pink Carnation)

I finally got a chance to read this book, recommended by a local store clerk. Unfortunately, when I got to the chapter in which Eloise finds information that might help her find out who the Pink Carnation is, it was easy from then on for the reader to know who the Carnation was indeed. It was way too predictable. The story (of all these spies) *is* interesting, it's just too bad that Willig could not come up with other possibilities to tell the reader who the spy was. In the end, there was no twist, and the ending actually left me unsatisfied. No, I won't spoil it and tell you who is the Carnation, you will find out yourself when you read it. And no, I will not read the follow up of the book, The Masque of the Black Tulip.
Despite this, Willig's writing is quite enjoyable, and the book reads very easily. If you like predictable novels, you'll definitely enjoy this one.

100% perfection

Posted : 16 years, 11 months ago on 12 May 2007 04:42 (A review of L'Audition (2005))

A first-rate directing job. Wonderful cast. Strong emotions. A script that is perfect, where everything is justified. A beautiful ending that isn't really beautiful. If I were asked to name one film to watch once in my life, this would definitely be it.
-----

cliche', still funny

Posted : 16 years, 11 months ago on 12 May 2007 04:28 (A review of Nuit de noces)

Somehow this movie is extremely predictable, but it's still funny. Maybe it's just because I like Emile Gaudreault's and Marc Brunet's sense of humor. I always look forward to their films (Gaudreault) and tv series (Brunet).
Simple storyline: Boy meets girl, they fall in love, plan to get married, parents enlist them in a win-a-trip-to-Niagara contest, they win, and must go with their respective family to Niagara, and... get married. However, boy and girl do not have the same views on marriage.
Brouillette shows that she's very good as a comedian. Morency displays acting talent. Diane Lavallee is hilarious throughout the film. Robitaille and Courtemanche are badly cast though.
Definitely more a comedy than a romantic movie, it's still very enjoyable, despite all its cliches of couples, of love and of marriage.

worth watching

Posted : 16 years, 11 months ago on 11 May 2007 03:12 (A review of Idiocracy)

This was really worth watching.
I agree with Janhoo that this film started off well, with the reproduction habits of the population, and then went on to some teenage idiotic storyline.
That said, it is unfortunately also very representative of the society we live in. What can we expect of the current society when it creates shows where (to paraphrase Prelude76), if you're smarter than a 5th grader, you can win a million bucks? Society *IS* degrading, and this movie clearly shows it. It's pathetic and sad to watch, but also pretty realistic.

this is bad

Posted : 16 years, 11 months ago on 10 May 2007 06:44 (A review of Superman Returns)

I've seen my share of bad movies - haven't we all? But this was pure disappointment. Due to everything, really... First, the script (how corny and stupid can the dialogues get!?!), the editing (remember the opening scene!), and then, the acting - sorry, Routh does not have Reeves' charm, no one ever will of course, he just doesn't have what it takes to be a 'great' actor. Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor was possibly the only positive aspect of this film.
I'm basing my review on the first hour I watched, and the last 15 minutes - as the rest of the time, my family and I were sleeping through the darn film it was soooo boring.
Here's hoping that the next Superman movie (should there be one) be better!

needs to be on dvd!

Posted : 16 years, 11 months ago on 8 May 2007 09:17 (A review of At Play in the Fields of the Lord)

I remember the first time I picked this up to watch with my family, some 15 years ago. We all figured it was just another tv movie because we had never heard of it. Instead, we were all surprised by its quality. By the end of tape number one, we couldn't stop watching, and hurried to see tape number two. When that came to an end, we were asking for more.
It was (and still is) a beautiful film. The script is perfect. The film was shot in Brazil, so what can you expect but beautiful views of the Amazon and the rain forest. Splendid scenery, incredible shots.
An extraordinary cast (Hannah, Lithgow, Quinn, Bates) that was impressive.
As good as the book.
Pure beauty.
Now... when will this be out on DVD! It really deserves to be.

surprisingly good

Posted : 16 years, 11 months ago on 8 May 2007 03:26 (A review of Deja Vu)

I just sat down to watch this, with family.
What we expected: a typical Hollywood action-packed blockbuster with a great idea, destroyed in all ways possible.
What we got: an interesting somewhat plausible - still a little predictable - script, decent actors (no Oscar nominations here), great action, and a clever twist.
Fun entertainment, but if you pay attention to the details from the start, you'll have the ending figured all out.
