great isn't enough

Posted : 16 years, 10 months ago on 7 May 2007 07:22 (A review of Stand By Me (Deluxe Edition))

Great isn't enough of a word to describe this film.
While I'm not a fan of Stephen King, this certainly deserved a chance, especially considering this is _not_ one of his gory stories. (I really don't care for the horror genre.) I remember watching this when I was a kid, and today I still love it. I can't imagine any other actors playing those roles, and they seem to get better every time I watch this! The movie is just brilliant, well-directed, and unforgettable. The soundtrack is awesome. I gave this set (the deluxe edition) 9/10 because the second disc is a little disappointing (it's just a soundtrack CD with 8 songs!). At least this edition has a 32-page booklet with many "goodies" to make up for that disappointing extra disc.

I'm a Quebecer and I...

Posted : 16 years, 10 months ago on 7 May 2007 06:32 (A review of Bon Cop, Bad Cop)

have to disagree with Voxy.
I lived in Ontario recently, was born in Montreal, and I thought this movie was pure crap - and I'm being polite. This does not give any justice to Quebec actors who are truly excellent (Remy Girard, and Luc Picard to name only those two). BUT I do think the idea was interesting, just not well developed. There was _no_ comedy here, only stupidity. And plllllease, the girl screaming "Quebec Libre" while they are in bed - that is just plain stupid stupid stupid. There is no other word. Huard is also _not_ at his best, though he's not really an actor: he should have continued to do stand-up comedy, and left the acting business alone.

not much too added - excellent film

Posted : 16 years, 11 months ago on 2 May 2007 03:19 (A review of Memento)

I really don't have much to add to Prelude76's review, since I agree 100% with what is written. The story was certainly interesting and well directed. I can't imagine other actors in those roles. The editors must have enjoyed working on this film, since the story works backwards. It's a film that, finally, asks the audience to think, it's not just entertainment. The audience is captivated and engaged in Lenny's search for his wife's killer. Recommended movie, for all thriller and suspense lovers. (And I certainly will check out Nolan's previous film.)

So misunderstood - Such a great film

Posted : 16 years, 11 months ago on 1 May 2007 04:44 (A review of Kinky Boots)

For some unknown reason, very few people seem to have enjoyed this film. The story is, admittedly, rather simple and somewhat predictable. Charlie inherits the family shoe factory and must let workers go, for the market is simply... not what it used to be. One worker, Lauren, tells him to fight and find a niche market, which he will: in the form of a transvestite, played brilliantly by Chiwetel Ejiofor. Brilliant directing and extremely well-casted. I loved watching the production of shoes, and the designs that Lola creates are superb. The ending especially is predictable, but so what? This is a movie to be watched for entertainment, as well as for its amazing... soundtrack!

a classic

Posted : 16 years, 11 months ago on 28 April 2007 11:00 (A review of The Accused)

What can I say about such a wonderful movie. The storyline is quite simple right from the start. Sarah (Foster) entered a bar, and came out... after her rape. A lawyer (McGillis) takes her case and wants to see the gang rapists put away. Probably the best Jodie Foster role ever. Top-notch performance by a great cast, and splendidly directed and written. An instant classic. Worth watching every minute.

how much is biographical...

Posted : 16 years, 11 months ago on 28 April 2007 03:59 (A review of Running with Scissors)

Apparently this film is based on the life of Augusten Burroughs, the author of the book "Running with Scissors". While I was not interested in the book, the movie was certainly enjoyable, but how much of it is really biographical... As Olivia says, it is "so unbelievable and yet so real". Some situations will make you laugh, and others you will simply be stunned! I took it as a comedy, but I'm not sure how funny this was supposed to be. If this is indeed Burroughs' life at the age of 15, he certainly had an interesting lifestyle and it obviously shaped his personality, and you either love or hate him. - It is a fascinating film, with a good cast. Paltrow, Bening, Baldwin, Cox, Fiennes... I simply can't imagine other actors giving these captivating performances.

a well done "documentary"

Posted : 16 years, 11 months ago on 28 April 2007 03:40 (A review of Death of a President)

This was quite enjoyable. Not as entertainment, but rather as a study of what would be the possible reactions of people working close to the president of the U.S.A. if he were assassinated. If one were to arrive in the middle of the "fake documentary", it would be easy to take it as a reality and not fiction. That is how well done this film is. Believable actions and reactions, a very good script, great emotions. Don't avoid watching it, it's an eye opener to the world we live in.

so, so not impressed

Posted : 16 years, 11 months ago on 26 April 2007 02:25 (A review of The Gathering)

For a horror picture, I was not impressed. And I am *not* a horror picture fan, but I do enjoy thrillers. The plot looked good enough for a thriller. First I have to say that the entire family dislikes Ricci's acting, and here she is no better than in any other film she's ever acted in, she's worse than ever in our opinion. The photography however is quite beautiful, and has some nice scenery. The storyline unfortunately is quite predictable and makes the movie less than entertaining. For horror picture fans, look elsewhere. For a good thriller, look elsewhere too! Don't waste your time - or your money like I did. 3 stars is actually the highest rating I'd give this movie. so stupid and predictable

Posted : 16 years, 11 months ago on 26 April 2007 02:20 (A review of Night at the Museum)

Honestly, when we rented this, it looked like a good comedy for a night to watch as a family. Boy, were we disappointed. Granted, the movie has its funny moments but it wasn't enough to make it as enjoyable as it could have been. Ben Stiller isn't bad, but Robin Williams's talent should have gone elsewhere. My family and I all expected better performances! If you want a real comedy, I'd recommend Mrs Doubtfire with Williams, or Meet the Parents/Fockers with Stiller. THOSE are classics AND hilarious. Night at the Museum is just plain stupid, stupid, stupid. (2-disc Widescreen edition review)
